Purple Portal
by Emma Isabella
8th grade
Finnegan was walking to school when, all of a sudden, a bright purple light flashed and his surroundings changed drastically. The people around him vanished and his vision was obscured. As he regained his senses, he found himself standing in a dense, dark forest. The trees around him looked as if they were breathing which only added to his confusion. Finnegan reached for his phone to call his best friend, but it was nowhere to be found.
Just then, he heard a loud banging noise coming from within the forest. He turned around and saw a black figure approaching him. The figure called out to him and said, “Don’t worry, I’m human too. I’ve been living in this forest for hundreds of years. Come with me and I’ll show you what’s really outside.”
Despite his confusion, Finnegan decided to follow the mysterious man. As they walked, the man chanted something under his breath. Suddenly, a portal appeared before them. It was black and dense, and it pulsed with energy.
Finnegan stood still, staring at the portal in front of him. He had never seen anything like it before and he wasn’t sure if he was ready to cross over to the other side. The man next to him must have sensed his hesitation because he put a reassuring hand on Finnegan’s shoulder and gestured toward the portal, urging him to take the next step.
Finnegan took a deep breath and stepped forward, his heart racing with concern and fear. As he crossed over to the other side, he closed his eyes, not knowing what to expect on the other side. When Finnegan opened his eyes again, he found himself standing in front of a house. The house looked ordinary enough, but there was something about it that made Finnegan feel uneasy. It was as if the house had a life of its own, and it was watching him.
The man finally broke the silence, “The prophecy states that in a millennia, a hero who must not be named will return. Don’t ask questions, just answer.” Finnegan was taken aback by the man’s words. What did he mean by a hero who must not be named? And why was he here? He had so many questions, but he knew better than to ask. For now, he just had to trust the man and wait for the answers to reveal themselves.
As Finnegan was thinking over the man’s words, he suddenly heard a voice whispering in his head. It was a faint voice, but it was distinct enough to make him shudder. He couldn’t make out what the voice was saying, but he could feel its presence. It felt like the voice was trying to communicate with him, but he couldn’t understand its message.
Suddenly, Finnegan felt a sharp pain in his head and his vision blurred. He stumbled and fell to the ground, unconscious. When he woke up, he found himself lying on the forest floor next to the portal. The man was nowhere to be seen and the portal had vanished. Finnegan tried to sit up, but his head was still throbbing and his body felt weak. He realized that something strange had happened to him and he didn’t know what to do next.
As Finnegan tried to gather his bearings, he suddenly felt a jolt and the next thing he knew, he was falling through a dark tunnel. He could hear whispers and murmurs all around him and he felt like he was being pulled towards something. After what felt like an eternity, he finally landed on a hard surface and his vision eventually cleared.
Finnegan found himself in a large hall surrounded by people dressed in black robes. They were all staring at him intently with a mix of awe and reverence. He tried to stand up, but his body felt weak and he stumbled. The people rushed forward and caught him, preventing him from falling.
One of the people stepped forward and spoke, “Welcome, Your Highness. We’ve been waiting for your return for a long time. You are the prince of the underworld, and we are your loyal subjects.”
Finnegan was speechless. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He looked around, trying to make sense of his surroundings. Everything was different from what he was used to. The people, the clothes, the architecture, everything was alien to him. The people around him started chanting, “Long live the prince! Long live the prince!” Finnegan realized that he was in a strange place and he didn’t know how he got there. But, one thing was clear: the people around him believed that he was someone important and he had to play along if he wanted to survive.
